It begins with its catchy chorus and has you up on your feet within the first two lines. Indeed, “Bluegrass” is the only true uptempo song on Two Birds. The subject matter of “Bluegrass” is, in fact, similar to that of “I’ll Wear Your Ring”, but the tempo and overall feeling couldn’t be more different. To be honest, a few other drag queens should probably ask her to write their lyrics for them.įorget all sadness, it’s time to line dance in a giant barn! The fact that Trixie managed to squeeze two such songs onto one mini album shows that we should take her seriously as a songwriter. This downtempo gem is emotional without being too cheesy. So who knows? Maybe Trixie Mattel can not only interest drag fans in country music, but als country music fans in drag. Had “Seen My Man” been recorded by someone like Kacey Musgraves - and it surely sounds like it could have been - country radio would play it over and over again. It makes you want to jump into an old American car and drive along Route 66 with the windows down. Lyrically, it’s as old-fashioned as country gets, but the melody is highly infectious. It’s on this track that we find the strongest chorus hook of the entire album. Two Birds returns to midtempo territory with “Seen My Man”, a song about travelling and searching for love. This has to become the second single from the mini album. The sparse instrumentation, Trixie’s surprisingly impressive vocals, and the immaculate lyrics everyone can identify with make “I Know You…” a flawless country-folk ballad. It’ll break for sure when the bridge comes around and Trixie asks, “is it wrong if I listen to songs that we lived in?” If your heart managed to stay in one piece until after the second chorus, congratulations. And then I see you and I know you all over again.” I know I should just think of going and not where I’ve been. The moving verses build up to simple yet poignant choruses that steal your breath away: “ I know I’m adjusting. “I Know You All Over Again” is a heartbreaking downtempo ballad about loss and longing. Once again, there is a delicate and intriguing balance between summery upbeat melodies and drop-dead serious lyrics with just the right dose of metaphors. The chorus isn’t quite as catchy as that of “Mama Don’t Make Me…” but the midtempo verses are sublime. In contrast to the previous track, “Make Up Your Mind” features distinct southern rock influences. ![]()
